Sobre La Libertad por José Martí | About Freedom by José Martí (January 28, 1853 - May 19, 1895)

Freedom is the right that every man has to be honest, and to think and speak without hypocrisy….A man who obeys a bad government is not an honest man.

Like the bone to the human body, and the axle to a wheel, and the wing to a bird, and the air to the wing, so freedom is the essence of life. What is done without it is imperfect.

Man loves freedom, although he does not know that he loves it, and he is pushed by it and fleeing from where there is none.

Perhaps the enemies of freedom are because they judge it by its vociferations. If they knew its charms, the dignity that goes with it, how king-like the free man feels, the perpetual internal enlightenment that free and decorous self-awareness and self-exercise produce, there would perhaps be no greater friends of freedom than those who are its worst enemies.

With liberties, as with privileges, it happens that together they triumph or endanger, and that one cannot deceive or harm themselves without all feeling the harm or the benefit.

Terrible it is, freedom, to talk about yourself for the one who do not have.  A beast defeated by the tamer does not bend the knee with more anger. The depth of hell is known, and one looks from it, in his arrogance of the sun, at the living man. It bites the air, like a hyena bites the iron of its cage. The spirit twists in the body like a poisoned person. From the mud of the streets, the miserable one who lives without freedom would like to make the garment that suits him. Those who have you, oh freedom, do not know you. Those who do not have you should not talk about you, but conquer you.

One is free, but not to be vile: not to be indifferent to human pain; not to take advantage of the advantages of a political people, of the work created and maintained by the political conditions that are taken advantage of. Say no again. Man does not have the freedom to see impassively the slavery and dishonor of man, nor the efforts that men make for their freedom and honor.
